Scholarships are the financial help given to the students for their studies. Most of the time scholarships are given based on performances. More students from the U.S. are going to Germany to study. Part of the reason is the quality of education. Germany universities have a reputation of excellence but the real reason is cost.

Students in the United States normally face a fee of over $50,000 after four years of college, whilst in Germany at a public university they can expect to pay an average of $700 a semester, plus between $50 and $150 in registration fees. Quite often, you don't have a chance to check the university you are thinking of attending before the year starts, especially if this university is in another country. But it is worth the trouble and money, if your chances of attending are serious, to try and travel there and check the campus as well as the surroundings.

It will give you a better idea of what to expect, what kind of accomodations are available, what student life is like in that university and area and, very importantly, you can meet your future professors, mentors and advisors before you start studying with them. It can also make a good impression with them and will give you a foot in the door in terms of setting your reputation among the faculty.

When thinking of studying abroad, you need to take into consideration the fact that if you are just finishing your first or second year, meaning BA or MA, you might face problems when returning to your country in terms of continuing your education.

If you stop in the middle of a degree and take time off or return to your country to finish the degree, some of the points you received under your degree studies abroad might not be taken into account by the university in your home country. This is because every university and every country has a different system and different programs combining different courses and obligatory parts to each degree. You may complete three years out of four of studies for your Bachelor's degree, or what is known in America as undergraduate studies, but in your home country you will need to finish two more years in order to graduate with the degree completed.

Also, if you finished a degree in another country and return to your country to continue onto the next level, you may have to complete some compulsory courses at the university, which were not included in your study program abroad.

Studying abroad certainly has many advantages but it's good to be aware of the possible pitfalls as well.
